The Rise of the Sharing Economy

The idea of a sharing economy has grown exceedingly popular within the last decade. A sharing economy is essentially a sustainable economic ecosystem that thrives off of individuals sharing their resources, highlighting a form of collaborative consumption. With rising concerns of our natural environment, paired with a global recession, this sharing of resources is an efficient and viable way to use our resources to their fullest potential. In just recent years, this new leading-edge ecosystem has skyrocketed, as individuals have learned that they are able to share their products and services with others—for a price, of course. By definition, this collaboration is mutually beneficial for both parties involved in the exchange, whether that exchange be money, a good, or service.

A sharing economy can only be made possible with a basis of exchange through technology. As information technology and social media have become an increasingly prominent part of society across the globe, people are now able to connect and network with others on not only a local but an international level within the blink of an eye. As such, our digital and tech savvy world has made it possible to share and disburse the world’s resources on a global scale that will forever change the way businesses operate.

For example, coworking is a new style of the workplace that many companies are taking, following suit of a sharing economy. Coworking is not simply just an innovative way for individuals to meet their professional needs in the workplace, while also meeting their personal needs being a part of a strong community. The principles that coworking is founded upon also allow room for people to better understand how a sharing economy can help better each and every individual’s life. Working together and sharing resources helps everyone involved in the process, as opposed to the self-centered work and lifestyle practices that we are accustomed to seeing.

Several new, up-and-coming companies have taken advantage of this shift in consumerism. Uber has become one of the fastest and most efficient ways of transportation. Forget needing to flag down a cab ever again. With the click of a button, a certified driver will come to your location immediately, giving you a ride to your desired destination with a quick and completely cashless payment.

Drivy is another company based off of the idea of shared transportation, but with a twist. Europe’s leading peer-to-peer car rental service is an online platform that allows individuals to rent out their cars when not in use. For the sake of the world’s environment, a car is not always the most ideal way to get around, nor is it possible for everyone to own a car these days. This innovative company allows for those without this means of transportation to be able to get where they need when necessary.

Airbnb is a thriving company that helps homeowners rent out their homes, rooms, and apartments that would otherwise be unoccupied. This easy-to-use system has allowed for people from all over the world to rent space in nearly 200 countries across the globe. Why book a hotel when you can stay in a beautiful, authentic home to truly get the full experience when traveling to a new place.

A sharing economy will revolutionize the way our world works, creating a sense of connectedness and a newfound consideration for our planet.
